When you see a little girl as young as two speak in front of a crowd of as many as 70 grown-ups and children, it is amazing, often hysterical, and always heart-warming. That happens dozens of times every week at Hot Shots Soccer for Girls.

As a non-profit youth sports and enrichment program, we are dedicated to building girls’ (ages 2-7) athletic skills, but also their self-confidence, comfort in large social situations (hence the public speaking), love of reading (we start with a story time and give girls 4 books to take home each week), and parental bonds (all of our games involve parents, aunts, uncles, and/or grandparents).

The public speaking consists of the girls being invited to stand up in front of all the other girls and grown-ups and speak into a microphone to tell everyone their favorite food, favorite color, and favorite animal. Not exactly Public Speaking 101, but it requires a lot of courage at that age to do that.

In the first few weeks, only a handful of brave souls stand up. But by the tenth week, almost every girl is lined up for her chance to speak to the crowd. It’s just one of the many building blocks we use to help construct a strong social and emotional foundation for each girl as they grown into strong women.
